Rafael Díaz is an artist as well as a doctor. His artworks are created through the convergence of contemporary art languages with knowledge and experiences from his practice as a doctor.

To create Once Upon A Time, he shared authorship with his patients by giving them a mini-test used to determine their mental state. The mini-mental state examination is a method commonly used in clinical practice to detect cognitive impairment and monitor its evolution in patients with neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. In this test the patient has to answer basic questions (Where are you? What is the current year? How much is 100 minus 7?...) and to try to draw a clock in three specific steps. The responses and drawings determine the patient’s degree of cognitive impairment and the severity of the disease. Together, artist and patient create scientific documents that also generate a line of critical thinking between disease, ethics, and society and, in conjunction with a potent visual charge, reflect human nature in its maximum vulnerability.

This exhibition was presented along with two other shows in Madrid at Espacio Mínimo Gallery and Arniches 26 Gallery.

Para hacer el trabajo Once Upon A Time, compartió la autoría con sus pacientes dándoles una mini prueba utilizada para determinar su estado mental. El mini examen del estado mental es un método comúnmente utilizado en la práctica clínica para detectar el deterioro cognitivo y controlar su evolución en pacientes con trastornos neurológicos como el Alzheimer y otras formas de demencia. En esta prueba, el paciente tiene que responder preguntas básicas (¿Dónde estás? ¿Cuál es el año actual? ¿Cuánto es 100 menos 7? ...) y tratar de dibujar un reloj en tres pasos específicos. Las respuestas y los dibujos determinan el grado de deterioro cognitivo del paciente y la gravedad de la enfermedad. Juntos, artista y paciente crean documentos científicos que también generan una línea de pensamiento crítico entre la enfermedad, la ética y la sociedad y, junto con una potente carga visual, reflejan la naturaleza humana en su máxima vulnerabilidad.

Esta exposición se presentó junto con otras dos muestras en Madrid, en la Galería Espacio Mínimo y en la Galería Arniches 26.
